Alright, so let’s talk about courage, bravery, and valour. Three words that sound like they should be carved into marble somewhere—or, you know, embroidered on a throw pillow at a motivational speaker’s house.
First up, courage. Now, I don’t know about you, but courage for me usually involves something super mundane, like actually answering a phone call instead of letting it go to voicemail. Yes, I’m that person. People say “face your fears!” like they’re talking about slaying dragons. Well, my dragon just left a voicemail and wants to “circle back,” so… check and check!
Then we have bravery. That’s courage’s bolder cousin. You know, like when you wear an outfit you’re not 100% sure about and walk out the door anyway? Bravery is deciding, “Yup, today I am a person who wears mustard yellow!” even though every instinct says, “You might look like a condiment.” Bravery doesn’t care. It’s here to make a statement, even if that statement is, “This might have been a mistake.”
And then… oh boy, valour. Valour is courage and bravery combined after they’ve had a protein shake and done a TED Talk. Valour is like that one friend who looks at you over coffee and says, “You know what? We should quit our jobs and go backpacking.” It’s that big, soulful, “charge into the storm” kind of vibe. It’s the part of me that thinks, “Hey, I could totally save a small village if it came down to it!” until I remember that I’d probably be hiding behind a tree, whispering supportive thoughts from a safe distance.
So there you have it. Courage, bravery, and valour. Three noble qualities that, for me, are mostly about finding the strength to answer emails, wear questionable fashion choices, and occasionally—just occasionally—believe that I could handle life as a full-time adventurer… as long as there’s Wi-Fi and snacks.
