Our host for today NaPoWriMo, Today’s poetry resource is Secret Chords, an Instagram account where you will find a new poem every day. Finally, here’s today’s optional prompt. Today, we’d like to challenge you to write a platonic love poem. In other words, a poem not about a romantic partner, but some other kind of love – your love for your sister, or a friend, or even your love for a really good Chicago deep dish pizza. The poem should be written directly to the object of your affections (like a letter is written to “you”), and should describe at least three memories of you engaging with that person/thing.

To My Cherished Cup of Coffee,
Dear you, my morning embrace,
unfailingly you dawn as my solace,
in the quiet of the early light,
your aroma drifts, as if to say, all is right.
Remember those midwinter days, biting cold,
how you cradled warmth in your hold?
We watched the snow in lazy descent,
your steam rising like prayers quietly sent.
Then came the spring, in a cafe by the square,
the world buzzing without a care.
We sat by the window, you and I,
people watching, letting time lazily fly.
And those late nights, deadlines looming near,
your dark swirls swirling, soothing my fear.
Each sip a lighthouse in stormy sea,
a beacon, a comfort, steadfast in certainty.
Oh, my faithful friend, in cup after cup,
you’re the comfort I seek, the spirit I summon up,
not a simple drink, but a companion dear,
in this life’s dance, I’m glad you’re here.
Forever yours,
with every grateful sip.
