I have a confession to make. I never really liked sushi. Honestly, it feels like a crime against modern cuisine to admit it, but the truth has been cracking under the surface for years. Every time someone suggested sushi, I’d smile, nod, and select the tamest roll on the menu, as if that would remedy the situation.

But deep down, I knew this was a battle I’d never win. My taste buds just couldn’t course-correct no matter how much soy sauce I poured on. You’d think, with aged wisdom, I’d stop pretending. Yet there I was, sitting with my friends, arranging my chopsticks like a sushi connoisseur. A complete fraud.
And then came Jake. Poor Jake.
“Man, I gotta thank you,” Jake said one day, grinning ear to ear. “You’re the reason I quit accounting to open my food truck.”
My heart cracked a little. “Wait, what?”

“Yeah, dude! You were always raving about sushi. It made me think, you know? Follow my passion! Now, I’m living the dream.”
I stared at him, feeling like the worst fan in history. Jake’s truck, Sushi on the Roll, was a rolling tribute to my lie. And now he was basing his entire future on my fake enthusiasm.
So, it’s time. I’ve arranged to meet him over burgers—blessed, fully cooked burgers.
“Jake,” I’ll say, forcing a smile. “I have to confess… I don’t actually like sushi.”
His face will crack, and I’ll brace myself. But I think, in the end, Jake’s got the wisdom to pivot. Maybe a burger truck is next.
