Haphazardly Happy
Our Friday prompt for Stream of Consciousness Saturday is “hap.’” Find a word that starts with “hap” and use it any way you’d like. Enjoy!
[Scene: A cozy living room. The sun’s peeking through the curtains, casting a warm glow on the sofa where our protagonist is sprawled out, phone in hand, trying to figure out what to do with their day.]
Brain: “Alright, it’s Saturday. What’s the plan? Maybe a productive day? Or, you know, something less… ambitious?”
Self: “Hmm, let’s see… oh! ‘Hap’ is the prompt for today’s stream of consciousness thing. Let’s roll with it!”
Brain: “Hap? Like… happiness? Or maybe haphazard? Or happenstance? So many possibilities!”
Self: “Let’s just start typing and see what happens. Isn’t that the whole point of this stream of consciousness thing?”
Brain: “Fair enough. Here goes nothing… or everything. Who knows?”
So, hap. What a peculiar little start to a word. It’s like the beginning of something with potential—like the opening note of a song or the first bite of a pizza. You don’t quite know where it’s going, but you’re hoping it’s somewhere good.

Take haphazard, for example. Isn’t that just the perfect way to describe how most of us approach the weekend? You start with a plan—maybe brunch, maybe some errands—but then you end up in a Netflix rabbit hole at 3 PM, wondering where the day went. Classic.
Brain: “Remember last weekend when we had that whole plan to be super productive and ended up organizing the sock drawer instead?”
Self: “Yeah, that was… haphazardly satisfying, in a weird way.”
Or what about happenstance? That’s like the universe’s way of saying, “Hey, I know you had a plan, but here’s a curveball. Enjoy!” It’s when you bump into an old friend at the grocery store, or when you stumble upon a coffee shop that makes the best vanilla latte you’ve ever had. Pure, unplanned magic.
Brain: “Remember that time we accidentally found that park with the ducks and spent the whole afternoon there instead of at that meeting?”
Self: “That was peak happenstance. Ducks > meetings any day.”
And then there’s just plain happy. Simple, sweet, and sometimes elusive. But when it hits you—whether it’s from a random compliment, a perfectly timed joke, or that first sip of coffee in the morning—it’s like everything’s right in the world, even if just for a moment.
Brain: “Like when the pizza delivery arrives five minutes early. Pure bliss.”
Self: “Or when you find that one sock you thought the dryer had eaten. Happiness in its purest form.”
[End Scene: The sun’s higher in the sky now. The day’s ahead, full of potential—maybe a little haphazard, but with a dash of happenstance and, if we’re lucky, a sprinkle of happy.
So here’s to a haphazardly happy Saturday, where we embrace the chaos, roll with the unexpected, and find joy in the little things. Because sometimes, that’s all it takes to turn an ordinary day into something extraordinary.
Now, who’s up for some brunch? 🍳
