Your three words today are: DIG, UNEARTH, INTER

The town of Pine Hollow was small, nestled deep in the woods, far from any place where I was known. The air was crisp, carrying the scent of pine needles and the distant murmur of a river I hadn’t yet found. I parked my dusty sedan in front of a weathered diner and checked my reflection in the rearview mirror. New hair color, new clothes, new everything. I barely recognized myself.

I took a deep breath. “Emma Holloway,” I whispered, testing the sound of myf new name. It felt foreign on my tongue, but it was mine now. No more Charlotte Greene. She was gone, buried somewhere deep in the past, never to be unearthed again.

The diner’s bell jingled as I stepped inside, and the warmth and smell of fresh coffee greeted me. The place was cozy, with red vinyl booths and a long counter lined with stools. A few locals glanced up from their meals, giving me a once-over before returning to their conversations. I could feel their curiosity, but no one said anything.

I slid onto a stool at the counter, trying to appear at ease. A waitress with kind eyes and a name tag that read “Mary” approached with a steaming pot of coffee.

“Morning, sugar. What can I get for ya?”

“Just coffee, please,” I replied, offering a small smile. “And maybe some pie?”

Mary nodded and poured the coffee. “Best pie in town. New here, aren’t ya?”

I paused, feeling the weight of her question. This was the first test. I couldn’t afford to slip. “Yeah, just moved in. I’m looking to start fresh, you know?”

She smiled, a knowing look in her eyes. “Pine Hollow’s a good place for that. Quiet, friendly folks. What brings you here?”

I took a sip of my coffee, thinking fast. “I wanted a change. City life was too much—too loud, too busy. Thought I’d try something different.”

Mary nodded again, satisfied with my answer. “Well, welcome to Pine Hollow, Emma. Folks here are always curious about newcomers, but they’re good people. If you need anything, just holler.”

“Thanks, I appreciate that,” I said, relaxing slightly.

As Mary returned to the kitchen, I looked around, trying to dig into the atmosphere of this new life I was crafting. I had to be careful with every word, every move. Each interaction was like unearthing a new layer of soil, careful not to disturb what lay beneath. But there was no turning back now. I had chosen this path and buried my old self deep. Here, I was Emma Holloway—a woman with no past, only a future.

A man at the end of the counter caught my eye. He was in his late thirties, with a rugged, unshaven face and a certain darkness in his eyes. He nodded at me, a simple gesture, but it felt like a challenge. I nodded back, trying not to let my unease show.

He stood up and walked over, his boots echoing on the wooden floor. “You’re new in town,” he said, more of a statement than a question.

I smiled politely. “Yes, just got here.”

He studied me for a moment, as if trying to see through the layers I’d carefully constructed. “Well, good luck. Pine Hollow’s a great place—if you can handle its secrets.”

With that, he tipped his hat and left the diner, leaving me with a shiver that had nothing to do with the cold. I watched him go, my heart pounding in my chest. Pine Hollow was supposed to be my escape, my chance to start over. But it seemed this town had its own mysteries, ones I might not be ready to unearth.

I took a deep breath and reminded myself why I was here. The past was buried. All that mattered now was the future. And whatever secrets Pine Hollow held, I was determined to dig them up—one way or another.
