Monday Morning, 8:45 AM
Tom: (yawning) Morning, Lisa.
Lisa: Morning, Tom. Rough weekend?
Tom: You could say that. I went camping with my cousin. Let’s just say, “never again.”
Lisa: Oh no, what happened?
Tom: Where do I start? First, I see headlights coming towards our tent in the middle of the night. Turns out, it was a raccoon with a flashlight.
Lisa: (laughing) You’re kidding!
Tom: I wish. Then, it’s cold and there’s no music because my phone died. Just nature sounds, which aren’t as peaceful as they’re cracked up to be. Anyway, let’s see what fresh hell awaits us today.
(Tom reaches his desk and sees the voicemail light blinking on his phone.)
Tom: Great, already a message from the boss.
Lisa: Oh, you’re in trouble.
Tom: (sarcastically) Thanks for the vote of confidence. (Picks up the phone and dials voicemail) Let’s see what this is about.
(Voicemail voice): You have one new message. First message:
Boss: (sounding frantic) Tom, it’s urgent. I need you to come by my house immediately. There’s something… peculiar happening. It’s not work-related, but I really need your help. Please, as soon as you get this.
Lisa: What’s that all about?
Tom: I have no idea. I guess I’m about to find out. Cover for me?
Lisa: Sure thing, but you owe me details later.
(Tom drives over to his boss’s house, puzzled and a little anxious. He knocks on the door.)
Boss: (opens the door quickly) Tom, thank goodness you’re here!
Tom: Morning, Mr. Johnson. What’s the emergency?
Boss: (whispering) Come in, come in. Follow me to the basement.
Tom: (thinking) This is how horror movies start.
(They head down to the basement, which is surprisingly well-lit and organized. There’s a large box in the middle of the room.)
Boss: (gesturing to the box) This is it.
Tom: (confused) A box?
Boss: Not just any box. My grandmother left it to me. She said it contains something valuable, but it’s locked, and I can’t find the key. I need you to help me figure out how to open it.
Tom: (laughing) You called me over here for a locked box?
Boss: This is serious, Tom! She was very mysterious about it, and I have a feeling it’s important.
Tom: Alright, alright. Let me take a look.
(Tom examines the box. It’s old and has intricate designs. There’s no obvious lock, but it looks like a puzzle box.)
Tom: This looks like one of those puzzle boxes. You need to solve it to open it.
Boss: I’ve been trying all weekend. I thought you might have better luck.
Tom: (smirking) You called the right guy. I’m great with puzzles.
(Tom starts manipulating the box. After a few minutes of twisting and turning, he hears a click, and the box opens.)
Boss: (excited) You did it!
Tom: (looking inside) Um… there’s just a note.
Boss: (grabs the note and reads aloud) “The real treasure is the journey and the memories we make along the way. Love, Grandma.”
Tom: (snorting) Well, that’s touching.
Boss: (laughing) All that stress for a note. Thanks, Tom. I really appreciate it.
Tom: No problem. Just remember, next time you have a “crisis,” maybe call a locksmith.
Boss: (chuckling) Deal. Now, let’s get back to work before Lisa takes over your desk.
Tom: Oh, she’ll have a field day with this story.
(They head back to the office. As Tom walks in, Lisa is waiting, grinning.)
Lisa: So, what was the big emergency?
Tom: (sighs) Let’s just say, if you ever see headlights in the middle of the night, it’s probably a raccoon with a flashlight.
Lisa: (laughing) You’re going to have to explain that one.
Tom: Over coffee. It’s a long story.
(They head to the breakroom, Tom starting to recount his bizarre morning. It’s just another unpredictable day in the office, full of unexpected adventures and laughter.)
