How did I end up in this confrolly mess?

Vlad had always been a master at messing things up, but even he had to admit, this one took the cake. It all started on a lazy Sunday afternoon, with the sun streaming through his apartment windows, and Vlad lounging on his couch, scrolling through his phone. His current girlfriend, Celestial, was in the kitchen, whipping up her famous chocolate chip cookies, humming along to a playlist.

Vlad’s phone buzzed, and he saw a message from his ex, Emily. She’d sent a picture of a restaurant they used to frequent with the caption, “Remember this place?”

Vlad’s heart skipped a beat. It wasn’t that he missed Emily—he was perfectly happy with Celestial—but nostalgia had a funny way of tugging at his heartstrings. He quickly typed a response: “Yeah, I remember. We had some good times there. Hope you’re doing well.”

Satisfied, he hit send, then dropped his phone back on the coffee table. He heard Celestial’s voice from the kitchen. “Hey, babe, can you get the milk out of the fridge for me?”

“Sure thing,” Vlad called back, getting up to help. As he walked towards the kitchen, his phone buzzed again. He glanced at it and froze. The message he thought he’d sent to Emily had actually gone to Celestial.

His mind raced. How could he fix this? Before he could come up with a plan, Celestial walked into the living room, wiping her hands on a dish towel. “Vlad, what’s this?” she asked, holding up her phone.

Vlad’s mouth went dry. “Uh, it’s a, uh, a message,” he stammered.

Celestial raised an eyebrow. “I can see that. Who were you trying to send it to?”

Vlad gulped. There was no use lying now. “It was meant for Emily,” he admitted. “She sent me a picture of that restaurant we used to go to, and I just responded without thinking. I swear, it didn’t mean anything.”

Celestial’s eyes narrowed. “You’re texting your ex? About ‘good times’ you had together?”

Vlad held up his hands defensively. “It’s not like that, Celestial. It was just a harmless text. I didn’t even mean to send it to you. It was a mistake!”

Celestial crossed her arms, looking unimpressed. “A mistake. Right.”

The doorbell rang, saving Vlad from further immediate questioning. He rushed to answer it, hoping for a distraction. It was their neighbor, Dave, holding a package. “Hey, Vlad, this got delivered to my place by mistake.”

“Thanks, Dave,” Vlad said, taking the package. Dave glanced over Vlad’s shoulder and gave him a knowing look. “Everything okay in there?”

“Yeah, just a little mix-up,” Vlad muttered.

As soon as he shut the door, Celestial was back on him. “So, you’re still talking to Emily, huh?”

“No! I mean, yes, but it’s not like we talk all the time. Just the occasional message,” Vlad said, feeling cornered.

Celestial’s phone buzzed. She looked at it, her face softening slightly. “It’s Emily,” she said, surprise in her voice. “She just sent me a message saying she didn’t mean to cause any trouble and that she was just feeling nostalgic.”

Vlad breathed a sigh of relief. “See? Even she says it was nothing.”

Celestial still looked skeptical, but she sighed. “Okay, I believe you. But you need to be more careful, Vlad. We can’t have any more mix-ups like this.”

“I promise,” Vlad said, relieved that the storm seemed to be passing.

Just then, the oven timer went off. “The cookies!” Celestial exclaimed, rushing back to the kitchen. Vlad followed, eager to help and put this whole mess behind them.

They spent the next hour baking and eating cookies, the tension slowly melting away. But as they were finishing up, Vlad’s phone buzzed again. He glanced at it nervously. It was a group chat notification from his friends, making plans for the next weekend.

Vlad laughed and showed the message to Celestial. “Look, no exes involved this time.”

Celestial rolled her eyes, but she was smiling. “Just don’t go sending any messages meant for them to me, okay?”

Vlad grinned. “You got it.”

As they settled back on the couch, munching on cookies and watching a movie, Vlad felt a sense of calm. He’d messed up, but they’d gotten through it. And he’d learned a valuable lesson: always double-check the recipient before hitting send.

Just as he was about to relax completely, his phone buzzed one last time. Vlad picked it up and groaned. It was a message from his mom, asking if he and Emily were getting back together. He showed it to Celestial, who burst out laughing.

“Guess you better call her and set things straight,” she said, shaking her head.

Vlad sighed, picking up his phone. “Yeah, I think I’ve had enough confrolly for one day.”

Celestial kissed his cheek. “Don’t worry, you’ll get it right eventually.”

And as Vlad dialed his mom’s number, he couldn’t help but smile. Life was messy, but at least he had someone to share the mess with.

Just as he thought things were finally settled, Celestial turned to him with a mischievous grin. “You know, Vlad, I think we need a new word for these kinds of mix-ups. How about ‘confrolly’? It’s when you’re trying to be in control but end up making a mess anyway.”

Vlad laughed, the tension fully broken. “Confrolly, huh? Sounds about right. Here’s to avoiding any more confrolly situations in the future.”

Celestial chuckled. “Or at least handling them together when they happen.”

And with that, they clinked their cookie-filled hands in a playful toast to navigating life’s confrolly moments side by side.
