The Five-Timer’s Guide to Love

The Irony of Expertise

Dr. Cassandra Hartwell, a name synonymous with marital salvation, sat in her plush office, the walls lined with degrees and accolades. She was the author of the best-selling book, “Till Resentment Do Us Part,” and her advice had mended countless relationships. Yet, here she was, adjusting her wedding ring—a ring she had become quite adept at sliding on and off over the years.

“Dr. Hartwell, your 10 o’clock is here,” chimed her assistant through the intercom.

“Send them in, June,” Cassandra replied, her voice a blend of warmth and weariness.

The door opened to reveal the Petersons, a couple on the brink of their third anniversary and their first divorce. They took their seats on the opposite couch, a gulf of silence between them.

“Let’s start with why you’re here,” Cassandra began, clasping her hands together.

Mr. Peterson huffed, “Well, Dr. Hartwell, we’ve heard you’re the best, and God knows we need the best.”

Cassandra smiled, “I’ll take that as a compliment. Now, tell me—”

Mrs. Peterson cut in, “It’s his mother. She’s… omnipresent.”

Cassandra nodded, “Ah, the classic mother-in-law conundrum. But let’s not forget, folks, marriage is about compromise.”

The Petersons exchanged a skeptical glance.

The Counselor’s Conundrum

Later that evening, Cassandra sat at a chic restaurant, awaiting her current husband, the charming yet elusive Richard. As she sipped her wine, she couldn’t help but overhear a nearby patron say, “That’s Cassandra Hartwell. She’s saved more marriages than Cupid himself!”

Cassandra chuckled to herself. If only they knew.

Richard arrived, all apologies and charisma. “Sorry, my love, work was a nightmare.”

She waved it off, “It’s fine, Richard. Let’s just enjoy the evening.”

As they dined, Richard’s phone buzzed incessantly. Cassandra’s eyes narrowed, “Work again?”

“Always,” he sighed, silencing the phone.

The Revelation

The next day, Cassandra found herself in session with the newlyweds, the Martins, who were already bickering about finances.

“It’s just money, folks. It comes, it goes, but at the end of the day, it’s the love that remains,” she advised, though her own financial woes with Richard loomed in her mind.

As the Martins left, somewhat appeased, June approached with a sheepish look. “Your husband called. He’s at the Ritz for a conference and forgot his credit card.”

Cassandra’s heart sank. Another conference, another forgotten card.

The Unexpected Ally

That night, as Cassandra mulled over her life choices, her phone rang. It was Mr. Peterson.

“Dr. Hartwell, I just wanted to say thank you. Your advice today… it made a difference.”

Cassandra smiled, genuinely touched. “I’m glad to hear that, Mr. Peterson.”

“And, uh, if you ever need someone to talk to, my door’s always open.”

She chuckled, “I’ll keep that in mind.”

The Turning Point

The following week, Cassandra faced her reflection in the mirror. She had always been the counselor, the fixer, the one with the answers. But perhaps it was time to counsel her own heart.

With a deep breath, she dialed Richard.

“Richard, we need to talk.”

The conversation that followed was difficult, but necessary. And as she hung up, she felt a weight lift off her shoulders.

Epilogue: The New Chapter

Cassandra continued her work, her reputation ever-growing. But now, she did so with a new understanding, a new empathy. She was no longer the heralded counselor on her fifth marriage.

She was Cassandra Hartwell, the woman who learned that sometimes, the best advice you can give is the advice you take yourself.

And as for love? Well, she was always open to a sixth chance.

The End.
