As the sun dipped below the horizon, Jessica knew she finally had to confront her fears. But let’s pause right there – because Jessica’s fears weren’t your garden-variety, run-of-the-mill jitters. No, sir. Jessica was afraid of something that would make the bravest of knights quiver in their shiny metal boots: she was scared to death of… flimsy plastic wrap.
That’s right, the clingy, fight-you-every-step-of-the-way, kitchen nemesis that’s supposed to protect your leftovers but instead turns into a modern-day torture device. It sticks to everything except the actual dish, right? Well, Jessica had decided, once and for all, to face this transparent beast.

Armed with nothing but determination and a pair of scissors she was too scared to use (because last time, she ended up crafting a plastic wrap ball gown by accident), Jessica stood at the kitchen counter, the roll of plastic wrap in front of her, mocking her with its silent, plasticky taunts.
The battle was epic. She pulled, it clung. She cut, it tangled. She wrapped, it wrinkled. It was like trying to dress a very angry octopus. At one point, her cat, Mr. Whiskers, attracted by the commotion, leaped into the fray, only to become a feline mummy of sorts. Jessica, halfway wrapped to the counter herself, couldn’t help but laugh at the absurdity of it all.

Finally, after what felt like an eternity of wrestling with the adhesive abomination, Jessica emerged victorious. The leftovers were secured, her cat was freed, and her dignity – though slightly crinkled – remained intact. She had faced the plastic wrap and lived to tell the tale. And though she knew she’d have to battle the plastic monster again someday, for now, she reveled in her triumph.
From that day forward, whenever Jessica peered into the depths of her kitchen drawer, she did so with a smirk. Because now, she was the undisputed, undefeated champion of the wrap. And Mr. Whiskers, well, he stayed clear of the kitchen altogether – some battles are just not meant for cats.
So let this be a lesson to all who fear the mundane monsters hiding in their homes: sometimes, the greatest victories come from overcoming the smallest adversaries. And also, always keep a pair of scissors handy. Just, maybe don’t wear them like a sword – unless you’re into that sort of thing.
In response to Fandango’s Story Starter #140 where we
build a story (prose or poetry) around that sentence/fragment. It doesn’t have to be the first sentence in your story, and you don’t even have to use it in your post at all if you don’t want to. The purpose of the teaser is simply to spark your imagination and to get your storytelling juices flowing.
This week’s Story Starter teaser is:
As the sun dipped below the horizon, Jessica knew she finally had to confront her fears.
