Anger is the Uninvited Guest in Our Emotional Living Room

Let’s infuse my previous blog post from January 14, 2021 with a bit more vitality and connection. Here we go:

“Anger: The Uninvited Guest in Our Emotional Living Room”

Ever had an uninvited guest barge into your home, raid your fridge, plop down on your couch, and refuse to leave? That, my friends, is anger in a nutshell. It’s the emotion that kicks down the door of your peace of mind and makes itself right at home. What does anger look like, you ask? It’s got many faces – from the silent treatment to the not-so-silent outbursts. It can look like anyone, from your overworked barista to your button-pushing sibling.

Now, let’s chat about how anger shows up in the grand ol’ USA. We wear it like a badge of honor, don’t we? “I’m mad, and the world has to know!” becomes our battle cry. But let’s be real, how often is our rage about something that truly matters? Sometimes, it feels like we’re just addicted to the adrenaline.

Here’s the beautiful part, though: Life’s a big ol’ buffet, and we get to pick who sits at our table. We can choose the cool, calm, and collected pals or the ones that bring out our inner Hulk. Every action, every word – that’s on us, folks. Nobody else pulls our strings.

And yeah, sure, we’ve all heard it – “He made me so mad I couldn’t see straight,” or “She pushed me to it!” But at the end of the day, it takes two to tango, and it takes one to step off the dance floor. Whether it’s a rocky romance or a toxic tete-a-tete, staying or going is in our hands.

However, let’s be clear: I’m not talking about the kiddos under someone’s wing – that’s a whole different ballgame with different rules. The grown-ups in charge, they’ve got a hefty job molding the tiny humans into decent big humans.

Anger, though, it’s like walking around with foggy glasses. It doesn’t free you; it just pretends to, giving you that sweet illusion that you’re totally in the right. But here’s a little secret – I get ticked off too. The difference? I don’t let it set up camp. Stewing in my own sour mood while the other person is out there living their best life? No thanks. That’s like drinking poison and expecting the other person to fall ill.

So, I say, chase after that heartbeat of yours, because that’s where you’ll find your truth. Anger? It’s just a cloud passing through your sky. Acknowledge it, wave goodbye, and enjoy the sunshine when it peeks back out.
