The day I went for a jog in my new ‘Shape-Shift-Running’ shoes, the ones guaranteed to make me “feel one with nature,” I didn’t expect it to be so literal.
I was halfway through the park, appreciating the greenery, when a chipper voice interrupted my second wind. “You’re doing great, Dave!” it cheered. I almost tripped over a root. Since when did my inner monologue come with a cheerleader—and who said it could call me Dave?
Ignoring it, I pressed on, and that’s when things got weird. The trees began to sway, groaning like old men stretching their backs, and the lake started to giggle as the fish performed a synchronized dance, their silver scales flashing like a disco ball.
“Pick up the pace, Dave!” the voice urged again. I was panting now, less from exertion and more from the absurdity of nature’s impromptu performance. I stopped for a breath, hands on my knees, and that’s when I noticed my shoes were… chatting with the grass.
“Isn’t he a bit heavy-footed?” one shoe said. “Definitely needs to work on his stride,” the grass whispered back.
I gawked at them, then at the trail ahead, where a raccoon in a referee shirt blew a whistle. “Foul on the play! Shoes offside!”
That was it. I was officially losing it. I decided to walk back, and as I turned, a duck waddled up, wearing tiny glasses. “You’ve passed the vibe check,” it quacked solemnly, handing me a gold star sticker.
I peeled off my shoes and walked barefoot, carrying them under my arm. The voice had quieted down, and nature had returned to its usual serenity.
“Best run ever,” I muttered, my Shape-Shift-Running shoes snoring softly as we exited the park.
