JSW Challenge 2-5-2024 His Name is Marvin

The JSW Challenge is open to anybody who wishes to participate. Using the writing prompt, write a flash fiction no longer than 300 words and post it to your page. The Challenge starts on Monday and runs through Sunday each week.

The words on the ancient scroll seemed to dance before Marvin’s eyes, “He who holds the Chalice of Ages shall be granted a power most extraordinary, born for greatness…” Marvin’s heart thundered. Finally, a destiny worth ditching his dead-end job as a mystical artifacts accountant.

He’d found the Chalice of Ages in the break room, next to the microwave, lodged between a copy of “Necromancy for Dummies” and a half-eaten tuna sandwich. Apparently, the last guy who “held” it was only interested in holding the office record for longest lunch break.

Marvin clutched the chalice, waiting for the heavens to part, for the ancient prophecy to crown him with glory. Instead, a slip of paper popped out of the chalice like a fortune cookie. It read, “Congratulations, bearer of the Chalice! Your great power is… never needing to double-check your Excel spreadsheets again.”

That’s it? Marvin’s face dropped. Centuries of legend, and the great power was being the Gandalf of accounting software?

He brought the chalice back to his desk, the office buzzing with the usual drone of keyboards and the aroma of burned coffee. But as he updated the ledger, something magical happened. His fingers flew across the keys with the grace of a piano maestro. Numbers crunched themselves in harmony, formulas wove spells of fiscal stability, and even Karen from HR couldn’t find a single error in his reports.

The office began to whisper of Marvin’s uncanny gift. No longer was he Marvin the Mediocre; he was Marvin, Master of Margins, the Excel Wizard, the Prophet of Profit!

As the quarterly audit approached, Marvin held the chalice aloft and declared, “I was born for this.”

And the crowd cheered (or at least, they would have, if they weren’t so engrossed in their own spreadsheets). But in Marvin’s heart, the Chalice of Ages had fulfilled its promise, one perfectly balanced account at a time.
