Why Make Life Harder for Yourself?”

This week’s Fandango’s Story Starter teaser is: “Why make life harder for yourself?” Claire asked him as she….

Claire’s Quirky Quest

“Why make life harder for yourself?” Claire asked him as she watched her neighbor, Mr. Jenkins, attempt to mow his lawn with a pair of scissors. The sun was high, the grass was thick, and Mr. Jenkins, well, he was as determined as a squirrel before winter.

Claire, armed with a blend of curiosity and a freshly brewed cup of tea, decided to investigate. Approaching the fence, she called out, “Mr. Jenkins, what on earth are you doing? Didn’t you win a state-of-the-art lawnmower at the town raffle?”

Mr. Jenkins, looking up with a grin that could only be described as mischievously proud, replied, “Ah, Claire! You see, this is my new fitness regime. Mowing with scissors is like a full-body workout. Plus, I’m practicing for the upcoming ‘Extreme Gardening Championship’!”

Baffled yet amused, Claire chuckled. “Only you would think of turning lawn mowing into an extreme sport, Mr. Jenkins.”

Just then, a group of joggers passed by, slowing down to witness the spectacle. “Is this a new CrossFit trend?” one of them asked, half-seriously. Before Claire could respond, Mr. Jenkins jumped in, “Absolutely! Scissor-mowing! Great for the glutes and the environment!”

Word spread quickly, and within an hour, Claire’s once-quiet street buzzed with spectators and local news crews, all eager to capture the birth of this quirky new sport. Claire, meanwhile, set up a lemonade stand, turning the bizarre situation into a small business opportunity.

As the sun began to set, Mr. Jenkins finally put down his scissors, his lawn now resembling a surrealist art piece rather than a suburban front yard. Claire, counting her lemonade earnings, couldn’t help but laugh. “Mr. Jenkins, you really know how to bring a community together,” she said, raising her glass in a toast.

“Claire,” Mr. Jenkins replied with a wink, “life’s too short for ordinary lawnmowers. Sometimes, you’ve got to make life interesting, even if it means a little extra work.”

And with that, the first (and possibly last) scissor-mowing championship came to an end, leaving the neighborhood a little closer, a lot more entertained, and with one very unique lawn.
