My Hilarious Reply to a Classic

A Poetic Duel

Welcome to this week’s edition of Sunday Confessionals, (brought to you by Mindlovemisery’s Menagerie) where we dive headfirst into the vat of poetic inspiration! I’ve taken up the challenge to pick a poem and write a reply. So, I chose Robert Frost’s “The Road Not Taken.” Why? Because I always wondered if that guy ever thought, “Maybe I should’ve just taken the GPS route.”

The Original: A Path Less Traveled

We all know the drill: two roads, a forest, and a guy having a mini existential crisis. Frost goes all deep, choosing the road less traveled, and that’s made all the difference. Bravo, Frost, bravo.

My Poetic Reply: The Road I Kinda Regret Taking

So here’s my reply, a modern twist with a sprinkle of regret and a dash of humor:

“Two roads diverged in a yellow wood,
And sorry I could not travel both
And be one traveler, long I stood
And looked down one as far as I could
To where it bent in the undergrowth;

Then took the other, as just as fair,
And having perhaps the better claim,
Because it was grassy and wanted wear;
Though as for that the passing there
Had worn them really about the same.

And both that morning equally lay
In leaves no step had trodden black.
Oh, I kept the first for another day!
But knowing how way leads on to way,
I doubted if I should ever come back.

I shall be telling this with a sigh
Somewhere ages and ages hence:
Two roads diverged in a wood, and I—
I took the one most traveled by,
And that has made all the difference.

Because, you see, it led to a mall,
With sales and food courts and all.
The road less traveled might be great,
But hey, sometimes it’s okay to be late.

In the end, it’s all about the journey, right?
Whether you’re shopping or taking a hike.
Frost chose nature, I chose retail therapy,
Both roads are good, just different stories.”

In Conclusion: All Roads Lead to Fun

So, there you have it. My reply to Frost’s contemplative stroll. Sometimes, the road most traveled leads to a fantastic sale, and who can say no to that? In this poetic dialogue, I guess the moral of the story is: whichever road you choose, make sure there’s a snack at the end.

So, which poem would you reply to, and what would your response be? Are you a nature wanderer or a mall marauder? Share your poetic replies in the comments below and let’s turn this into a literary laugh fest!

  1. I think you did a fantastic job, with the images too; hope they were fun to generate!
There is just something special about hanging out at the mall for me, it used to be such an event, and the space would just feel so weird and inspiring, like an ecosystem someone grew in a jar! And the food courts have my love forever!

  2. Thank you so much, I thought it would be fun to step out of the box a little. 🙂 #MallMaraudersUnite

  3. I love that you kept the cadence and language of the original, but still made the poem your own; it does make it feel like a direct reply. I like how two different roads being too different stories is also very philosophically poignant, and gives so many different ways to interpret ourselves in the world. Also, I think I am a mall marauder!
