Colophon Chronicles

This post is in response to today’s Word of the Day “Colophon”. I just learned of this word and definition so here is my spin on it.

An Unexpected Tale of Timeless Love

Once upon a time in the whimsical world of words, there lived a term not many whispered about in everyday chit-chat. This term, my dear readers, is “Colophon” – a quaint, end-of-the-book character often overlooked, much like the shy kid in class who secretly harbors a world of talent.

But our story today isn’t just about this bibliophilic term. Oh no, it’s about a hidden love story so enchanting, it could only exist in the pages of a forgotten fairy tale. Let’s delve into the world of a dragon, not your garden-variety, fire-breathing beast, but a creature of profound intellect and surprising sensitivity.

Our dragon, let’s call him “Colo,” had a penchant for human creativity, especially the art of bookmaking. Hidden away in his lofty mountain abode, surrounded by a labyrinth of books (all with splendid colophons, of course), Colo spent centuries leafing through human history and tales. But amidst these pages, he found something more captivating than any colophon – a love for a human, an African American woman named Ada.

Ada, with eyes as deep as the night sky and a smile that could light up the darkest caverns of Colo’s heart, was a storyteller whose tales rivaled the stars in beauty and number. Her stories weren’t bound in books but were carried in the hearts of those who heard them.

But, dear readers, here’s the twist: Colo, in his dragon form, could never approach Ada. So, he did what any love-struck, shape-shifting dragon would do – he transformed into a human. As fate would have it, Ada, the storyteller, met Colo, the mysterious stranger, and what ensued was a love story written in the stars.

As their love blossomed, Colo was faced with a heart-wrenching dilemma. Ada, being mortal, would one day age and pass on, leaving our immortal dragon alone once more. Unable to bear this thought, Colo offered Ada the greatest gift he could – immortality. But Ada, with wisdom as timeless as the stars, knew that love, like life, was beautiful because it was fleeting.

She refused Colo’s gift, choosing instead to live a mortal life filled with genuine love and eventual loss. Colo, heartbroken yet enlightened by Ada’s wisdom, realized that true love wasn’t about holding on but letting go when the time was right.

As years passed, Ada aged like a fine wine, her stories enriched by the life she lived and the love she shared. Colo, in his human guise, stayed by her side, cherishing each moment, each wrinkle, each grey hair. And when Ada’s final chapter came to a close, Colo was there, holding her hand, whispering her stories back to her as she drifted into eternity.

After Ada’s passing, Colo, in his dragon form, returned to his mountain, his heart heavy yet full. He dedicated a special colophon in every book in his collection to Ada, immortalizing their love story in the annals of time.

So, dear readers, next time you stumble upon a colophon, remember this tale. It’s not just a mundane detail at the end of a book, but a secret space where timeless stories like Colo and Ada’s reside, reminding us that sometimes, the most enchanting tales are hidden in plain sight, waiting to be read between the lines.

And they lived, not “happily ever after,” but with a love that transcended time itself.

The End.
